To get to know Charlotte Nash a little bit better, we asked her a series of quickfire questions. Read on to hear more about the Oregon Ballet Theatre soloist’s favorite step, current reads, pointe shoe specs, and more.

What’s your favorite step in class?

Pirouettes.

What about your least favorite?

Italian fouettés.

Do you have a barre spot?

I do, but it’s a bit fluid. If somebody’s standing there, I’ll just move somewhere else. It’s usually myself, John-Paul Simoens, and Hannah Davis on a barre together.

What about in center?

I’m usually somewhere on the right side of the room. I don’t really know why. I could mix it up!

What are your pointe shoe specs?

I’m in a bit of a transition period. I’ve been in a Freed my entire life—“Maker B,” size 5 1/2—but I’m currently in a stock shoe. I also tried Suffolk Sterlings and really like them.

Simoens holds Nash by the waist as she touches his neck, her legs crossed with her left leg extended and her right leg in plié and on pointe. She wears a wedding dress and pink tights, while Simoens whites a white blouse with a dark burgundy vest and tights, and black boots.

Leather or canvas slippers?

Canvas.

Coffee or tea?

I drink a cup of coffee in the morning, and if I really need more caffeine, I’ll drink green tea in the afternoon.

What’s your go-to snack?

I love a banana, or one of those Clif protein bars.

What are you listening to?

This past year, I’ve been listening to a lot of Big Thief and Joni Mitchell. I love the podcasts Search Engine and If Books Could Kill, and I really like Moving Moments, with Alicia Graf Mack.

What do you like to watch on TV?

“My Brilliant Friend,” which is based on the first of the Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante. I read them all this past summer.

Do you like to read?

Yes! The Overstory [by Richard Powers] was the book that made me want to be a climate activist. I also love Donna Hart and am a Sally Rooney Fan. I recently read this book called Human Acts, by Han Kang. It’s a translation, but it’s an amazing one. I think everybody should read it.

What’s your favorite ballet to watch?

Onegin.

And your favorite to dance?

Serenade. It just feels so nice on your body.

Do you have any fun facts?

I don’t have big toenails! [Laughs.] I haven’t had them since I was little. So they can never get bruised.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Hyper-focused. I try to be kind. And attentive.

How would you describe your ideal day?

This is totally idealistic: I would wake up outside having camped somewhere, then I’d hike back and have a nice breakfast out. I’d want to go to a live music event with my friends in the afternoon and perform a ballet in the evening.
